WHERE SIN ABOUNDS, GRACE ABOUNDS MUCH MORE
Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more,
Paul had been writing in this chapter about how one man Adam, brought sin in the world and one Man Jesus, took away the sin of the world. Comparing the law to grace. Again, it’s also a picture where the 2nd is so much greater than the 1st. We see the first life in Adam tries to please God and by keeping the law we can’t be saved. However, when we are in Christ the 2nd Man, we can keep the law by abiding in Him. His mercy triumphs over judgment. I have often thought of this passage when I have been sharing the gospel, some people are so down about how bad they have been. I always say well it’s a good sign when we feel guilt, regret and remorse because it shows we have a conscience. One man shared that he had done so many bad things that he was past the point of forgiveness. I said no matter what we’ve done, His grace is so much greater.
For some people the pendulum has swung the other way and they just think they can do anything and its ok, God’s grace has covered it; cheap grace or hyper-grace. Jude 1:4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. We see this a lot today. There’s also those who think they have done so wickedly that they are past the point of forgiveness. This is why the good news is so incredibly good. We all need to see our sin with such gravity, that it is the blackest of stains that can’t be made right and only the blood of Jesus can wash away our sin. Psalm 139:1 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. God knows everything about us and some of those dark secrets and wicked, vile thoughts and yet He still showed love to us at the cross. “Jesus Christ knows the worst about you. Nonetheless, He is the one who loves you the most” – A.W. Tozer. This is reassuring to a guilty sinner and it reinforces the power of the cross where sin abounds, grace abounds much more!
